A friend of mine who works at Amazon just told me that Amazon is planning to add a lot of new categories to their India site. Amazon India has started with electronic items. But in next 30-60 days, they are planning to add fashion items and accessories to their catalogue. They are also planning to get into home essentials, beauty and healthcare categories.
The fast moving fashion apparel category will be introduced some time close to end of 2013. This would be interesting considering that Fashion apparel is selling really well online in India. With players like Jabong, Myntra and Zovi advertising heavily both online as well as offline, buying behaviour of Indian consumer has been changing rapidly. More and more consumers are now buying their clothes online. In fact, Flipkart has also started selling fashion apparel online and they are all over TV letting the viewers know that they are no more about books and electronics only.
Amazon is recruiting new talent at a ferocious pace. Have heard they are picking up talent from ecommerce services companies in India. They initially were outsourcing content development for products they plan to sell on their site. However, they have gone back on their decision and as they are doing in US, they have decided to produce all content in-house.
Another interesting development is Flipkart and Snapdeal moving completely into market-place model. This change in business model conincides with Amazon’s entry into India. Are both these developments linked? Has one caused other? We will never know. But this fight is going to get only interesting – World ecommerce power-house against entrenched Indian ecommerce players.
I am tracking these developments closely and will keep you posted as and when I come across anything interesting.
